“My Why” – I’m doing The Open and here’s why you should too!

It’s here. “The 2019 CrossFit Open version 2.0” has arrived and I have signed up. Have you?

For me personally, I can think of more reasons NOT to sign up than to sign up… yet I went ahead and hit that “Registration” button anyway. Why not? Well here’s why not:

I will be 7 months pregnant at the start of the Open and 8 months at the end. At this stage in the game, I have every excuse not to move if I don’t want to. I will be big, I will be heavy, things will be WAY harder than they should be. Not to mention, the hit my ego will take. I am quite competitive and it’s not easy for me to not be able to perform to my potential. All I can think of is my 15th place last year and how this year it will be more like 15,000. Obviously, there is a reason for that, and my rational mind knows that, but my competitive spirit doesn’t like it one bit! I will be tired, I won’t want to do some of the movements, I won’t be able to RX the workouts… blah, blah, blah. These are MY excuses and WE ALL have them. They may look and sound different from person to person, but if we let ourselves, we can all come up with some REALLY good ones that will let us off the hook.

So, why did I go ahead and hit the “Registration” button today? The answer is simple… Its YOU… ALL OF YOU!!! How can I expect the most from you and not give the most of myself? How can I let you all walk in everyday tired after working all day, or wrangling your kids, or going to school, and expect you to push yourself if I’m not willing to do the same? You are a unique group of people in that you care about your health and well-being and don’t make excuses for that. You find a way to make it work even on the days that you may not want to. You see the value in what you do and you make it a priority in your crazy and hectic life.

The CrossFit Open is special because it brings us, a group of likeminded people, together in the spirit of community. It allows us to showcase the hard work we’ve done all year and prove to ourselves that what we are doing is worth it! Even if you’re not where you want to be, or where you used to be in my case, you are still better off than 99% of people walking around out there. You can burpee, pullup, lift weight, run fast and whether you’re the best at these things OR THE WORST, you have the mental fortitude to do it, knowing just how good it is for you and your overall well-being.

So, I challenge you all to silent the part of your brain that says “I can’t” and find even ONE reason why you CAN! Sign up and come and have some fun with your gym pals. I can assure you that if you don’t, you will always have a little piece of yourself regretting it.

Hope to see your name on the leaderboard!
