My “Why” is Forever Changed

Among the many things this Covid-19 pandemic has done, it has changed my perception of what fitness and wellness means in my life. Up until now, my “why” for working out has been pretty clear to me. I do it because I want to be healthy. I do it because I like the aesthetic results. I do it because I love the community. I do it because of the mental peace and clarity it gives me. I do it for the social benefit. This collective “why” helps me to maintain balance in my life and quite frankly, is a major player in my overall happiness.

However, through this “uncertain time” I have added a new piece to this puzzle… I do it to put myself in the best possible position to survive a worldwide pandemic. How insane is that?!? This thought NEVER entered my mind before, but from now on, it will be at the forefront of my thinking EVERY.SINGLE.DAY.

Throughout all the scariness and sadness, one thought has given me some reassurance… I HAVE TRAINED FOR THIS. Granted, I didn’t know I was doing it, but never-the-less, I DID! As we start to re-enter the world, I hope you take a bit of comfort from that fact. There is NO guarantee of safety and precautions must be taken, but you have set yourself up to be in a good position to fight this virus, without even knowing it!

Every workout that left you laying on the mat gasping for breath has helped to strengthen your lungs. Every mile you’ve run, barbell you’ve lifted, and pullup you’ve attempted has given you additional protection and served to bolster your immune system. This lifestyle you have adopted will be the thing that provides you with some armor against this invisible enemy. YOU have done the work… YOU continue to do the work… and YOU should walk around, not with arrogance, but with confidence that the choices you have made in your life will afford you some protection.

The past few months have been a crazy rollercoaster and the next few are uncertain and unclear. But the one thing that should remain is your commitment to yourself, your commitment to your fitness, and your commitment to your future. Whatever that looks like, we will get through it together, SKYLANDS STRONG!
